New Opera Hero - New Opera Hero is now responsible for our music production

DR. FAUSTUS | 29Oct06

Christopher Marlowe

BRISTOL OLD VIC, October 2006

For this radically staged version of Marlowe’s perennial favourite we created video effects using an interactive system that was capable of making the video react to the action on stage - including responding to spoken words through a microphone, and overlaying effects on video in real-time.

Our resident childlike music genius- NEWOPERAHERO - created all the music and sound.

Burst produced and edited the extensive visuals of this frenetic and original piece by Asian Dub Foundation in collaboration with the ENO. Reviews were mixed but the staging, which strongly relied on our video, was often singled out as a very positive aspect - Time Out said “it certainly works as a spectacle…it features fantastic back projections” (13/9/2006), The Times called it an “eye-popping spectacle” (8/9/2006), and The Observer said “the designs…are lavish and innovative”.

DR. FAUSTUS - BOSNIA | 02Sep06

SPACE PRODUCTIONS BOSNIA / BRITISH COUNCIL

Sarajevo, august 2006

Burst spent a short time working in Sarajevo on this Bosnian update of the Faustus story, set in a futuristic, “metropolis” or “blade runner” style environment. After working on a short animated intro, which the director Haris Pasovic decided not to use, we instead created a sequence of still images that were used as miniature prints in personal child’s slide projectors. Each member of the audience received one of these mini-viewers to look at the slides.

PET SHOP BOYS | 14Jun06

World Tour 2006

We made full-length videos for 7 songs in their set, which were projected onto an ingenious ever-changing magic cube. The tour’s been really well received both in Europe and in the USA, with many reviews commenting on the visual appeal of the show.

Video clip #1: We don’t have a lot of video filmed live, but if you can stand looking at shaky distorted footage there’s some we shot from the audience at Bestival 2006. (quicktime, 280×212)
Video clip #2: The original animations from the songs in the above clips. (Clips require latest Quicktime - download Quicktime here)

Working closely with set designer Es Devlin we created animated sequences that were projected all over the set, including onto a singer suspended vertically in a bed, inside a tunnel, and as large back projections. German papers unanimously loved the production - with one calling the visuals “one of the unexpected stars of the show”. The production was revived in october.

Götterdämmerung | 14Apr04

Richard Wagner

NEW NATIONAL THEATRE TOKYO, April 2004

-main image-

We worked with director Keith Warner and designer David Fielding to create two extended animated sequences for the rhine journey and the cataclysmic finale. We were inspired by David’s colourful and tokyo-inspired set and once we were there the whole amazing tokyo experience ended up being reflected in our work.
